The collection consists of a photocopy of a typewritten transcript of Griest's published journal, "Three Years in Dixie. Personal adventures, scenes and incidents of the march. The journal of Alva C. Griest, Company B, 22nd Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, First Brigade, Second Division, First Cavalry Corps." The journal is a daily record of his experiences in the war. Folders 1 and 2 contain the copies of the entire journal and folder 3 contains one of Griest's original journals dated 10 August to 31 December 1863.

Alva C. Griest was born 22 January 1840 in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He enlisted in the army on 19 July 1862 and was mustered into the 72nd Indiana Volunteers. He began keeping a diary when he left home and continued until his discharge in July 1865. He died at Harrisburg, Saline County, Illinois on 20 October 1880.
